They both had sufficient power to leave the relationship. When you don't have money or resources is when you're really stuck.

no, that's a big factor but only one factor of many; a lot of people here reduce power to money or the lack of it, so does Ed Ved

I don't think "why didn't they just leave" is ever an appropriate question in an abuse situation

i think asking someone in an abusive relationship why they don't leave is a bad idea. it's essentially shaming that person.

I think abuse victims are quite beyond trying to convince people of why they couldn't leave; it's very far down the list of pertinent questions in this case, imo

it's also disingenuous to assume people are asking that question in good faith, just to "get to the bottom of the situation"; people asking it, the overwhelming majority of the time, are implying that one or both parties somehow made the choice to keep experiencing abuse, and that they would not have
