Pick One Song to Define A Decade.

Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

Pick One Song to Define A Decade.

Post by epilogue »

Maybe we have this thread? I couldn't find it but if we do I can merge them.

I was trying to think if there was a single song that most completely embodied any individual decade. For example, I kept coming back to Black Hole Sun as a full embodiment of the 1990s. Like, if someone asked me to play them one song that more or less summed up the vibe/esthetic of the entire decade, maybe that's the song I'd play them and expect them to sort of basically get it.

This is tough because there are so many genres and every has so many different experiences and whatnot. But if you have a thought on this, let's hear it.

Is there such a thing?

Which song would you pick to define any given decade of music?

We're listening to a CD labeled 80s Mix (at least that's what I'm told, but I think someone can't read) but it's all 50s/60s songs. So far none of the songs played are a song I'd consider the quintessential song from that decade.

I would say Beat It - I mean you have the pop, the EVH guitar solo, and a video of dudes inexplicably tying their wrists together and engaging in a dancing knife fight while Michael Jackson comtemplatedly sings from his bedroom. What’s more 80s than that!?
