i debated between this, killing in the name of and radio song by rem. you can't have a song define the 90s that doesnt incorporate hip hop in some way.

Good suggestion. Beck has that ability and especially in this song, to do that thing where he incorporates all these musical elements but makes it highly listenable while delivering a tongue in cheek message that sums up the vibe. This is a great one, and there are probably a few more from Odelay that also fit the bill.
