Re: Steve Albini fans
This morning I reached out to a hardcore albinoid in this thread for a recommendation. i asked this fellow fan for something from the Albini canon that is "aggressive but not necessarily angry" for the purposes of a morning run in some drenching Texas humidity. The recommendation that came back was Bellini - Snowing Sun.
Unfortunately, the streaming service that I use does not offer that band or title, so I had to improvise.
I looked over the canon listed here, and based on name/album art/track length I settled on Om - Pilgrimage. Let me tell you, this selection was perfect for my purposes. Heavy and sludgy, but not in any way overtly heady or aggressive. The drums pummel while the rest of the music blends in to your surroundings. Hearing this music with a murky bayou to my right, thick canopy of trees and vines, the occasional cardinal or heron gliding nearby -- just perfect.
Afterwards on the drive to run errands I went with Silkworm - Lifestyle. Also perfect for its purpose of being catchy car music that sounds great as a recording. Clear Pavement influence on a few of these songs.

Re: Steve Albini fans
I'll probably listen to Silkworm waaaay more often, but I can tell that Om will be there for me when I really need it again. Glad I discovered this stuff via you/this thread.
Semi-related, my child now sings the chorus of "Dive" by Nirvana pretty emphatically after a couple of listens in the car over the last week. Can't tell if that's a parenting fail or victory.

one of my favorite things about lurking or logging into RM is reading everyone's experiences and recommendations for music.
i spent a better part of this morning listening to Songs: Ohia's Didn't It Rain, and had intended to come here to post about it. then i searched up Silkworm on spotify and hit play on Lifestyle.
i like it.
the power of RM at work.

Didn't it Rain is a classic. Haven't listened in a long while but it's one I own on vinyl.

oh, he is/was. i just hadn't listened to a lot of the earlier stuff as often. i usually play a few songs off MEC now and again, but rare deep dives.Malloy wrote:surprised molina wasn’t already on your radar. feel like he looms large over ob (or did)dad wrote:one of my favorite things about lurking or logging into RM is reading everyone's experiences and recommendations for music.

Re: Steve Albini fans
There was a time on RM where a lot of the tastemakers were pushing a double dose of molina over in OB and roberto bolano over in A&E...and I took it all in. That was one of the loneliest and darkest eras of my life.

Had to be. I was living in the garage apartment mooching internet at that time. Some days I'd just let the electricity bill ride as long as I could. Burned me a couple of times, but at least I knew I always had molina. Then he went on to die.Malloy wrote:08, 09???washing machine wrote:There was a time on RM where a lot of the tastemakers were pushing a double dose of molina over in OB and roberto bolano over in A&E...and I took it all in.
