I think that given their influence on Kurt Vile, there’s something from the early days you could sink into.washing machine wrote:I never really did too much about this post. Maybe this band just isn't for me.washing machine wrote:It's criminal how unfamiliar I am with Dinosaur Jr., given my general taste.
Perhaps someone I trust can convince me otherwise. vinylguy? self?

Re: Feel The Pain: The Officially Awesome Dinosaur Jr Thread
I mean, I'm familiar with their sound on those 90s records but I don't know any of them by heart. I owned Hand it Over and of course Green Mind is a classic. Freak Scene from 1991: The Year Punk Broke is a killer performance. Yet I just don't live and breath this discography like I do some of their contemporaries (Sonic Youth, Pavement...)
Maybe it would help if someone would explain the band's dynamics to me? Just three guys, right? J, Lou and that drummer? Who writes the songs? Do these guys get along? Was there a "turning point" album within this band's discography that changed the sound or anything?

Yes (the drummer is Murph). That's the original Dinosaur Jr line-up that existed in the 80s, and later reunited circa mid 00s.washing machine wrote:Maybe it would help if someone would explain the band's dynamics to me? Just three guys, right? J, Lou and that drummer?
J mainly, but Lou also writes a few. He sings those.washing machine wrote:Who writes the songs?
They didn't used to, which is why the band split originally, but I think they do now.washing machine wrote:Do these guys get along?
Circa late 80s, Lou left the band, J and Murph carried on with other bassists. By the early 90s, Murph was out too. The band was more or less a J side project at this point, but he eventually mended fences with both Lou and Murph and they decided to pick things up and continue. This version of the band has now been pretty consistent again for 15+ years, so that's nice for everyone.
I think You're Living All Over Me, their second album, is close to being that.washing machine wrote:Was there a "turning point" album within this band's discography that changed the sound or anything?

Gave Beyond a listen on a run a couple of days ago. I didn't realize I knew "Crumble" from that album so well. Not sure why I've heard it that often, it's not on radio around here or anything. Guess it just shows up on a lot of playlists. Enjoyed the album. Definitely the classic Dino Jr. sound that I'm familiar with.VinylGuy wrote:I would recommend their first album with the original lineup back, Its called Beyond, and i fucking love it.

yeah, its a great album! It was kind of a surprise back in the day not only that those guys were back together but that they manage to make a classic album with so many great songs.washing machine wrote:Gave Beyond a listen on a run a couple of days ago. "This is All I Came to Do" stood out for me. Whole album is getting another listen very soon. When I'm on a run it all kind of bleeds together, but these guitars are good for that sort of thing.VinylGuy wrote:yeah, its a great album! Re: Feel The Pain: The Officially Awesome Dinosaur Jr Thread
Saw them on their Where You Been anniversary tour earlier this year and was very underwhelmed, definitely the least fun I've had at a J Mascis show.
J seemed decidedly uninterested while Lou and Murph were putting in a heap of effort for not much result. J also had to pause between every song for some roadie to come in and swap over large cardboard sheets that must have had song lyrics on them. Not going to lie, it was a little bit depressing.

Well J is a very weird dude so i totally get that a show can function or not depending on his vibe.
But i saw a few proshots from this year and damn they were full into it.
Very exited.
