Is an irrational time signature like 7/12 more difficult to play than 4/4? Yes, of course. How is that germane to a conversation where we have examples of two drummers playing the same piece, in the same time signature, and radically altering the dynamics and drive of the song?

Tying it all together :nice:

I can play a Chad Smith song. You’ll know it’s not him playing, but I can do it. On the other hand it would take a ton of very dedicated practice to play a Danny Carey song and if it involves a lot of fast double bass, forget about it. Playing super super fast also difficult regardless of time signature.

Different players have a different style/groove/musical personality. 4/4 is also easier (more natural) than anything else. Both are concurrently true.

seems tree plays more like the stiff matt cameron. give me funky chad smith any day; that's what pearl jam needs.

Incorrect. I like to keep it interesting. Chad Smith and Matt Cameron both bore me to death

it is.. what's not subjective is whether or not you're playing in time with the rest of the band.. that was my point earlier that confused Jorge so much

I'd say I'm glad you settled on a version of your argument, but I'm not convinced I won't come back later to find you've edited this post 5 more times

I've been saying the same thing this whole time. You keep misunderstanding me and taking my words out of context. This is dumb. You're just trying to "beat" me at this somehow and it shouldn't even be a competition. It's all cause you started this whole thing by "durrr" mocking me and my opinion. And of course anytime there's any sort of conflict with tree_ on the board you'll see wease is the first one to pile on.

Like I said, we're speaking different languages. You're talking about how hard it is to play complex time signatures, and I already told you I don't disagree that yes, all things being equal, playing to a complex time signature is harder than the more intuitive 4/4 we in the western music tradition are hardwired to understand.

I'm talking about the skill it takes to use the drums expressively, to bring color, movement, groove, swing, dynamics, to even a 4/4 beat. Not to be a human metronome. This is what you said any drummer can do and is devoid of any creativity (your words), and that you don't understand very well (also your words).

I hope this argument goes on forever!

I don't remember those words you are saying I said, or in which context I said them. And it's even possible my opinion on the matter has changed since then? Either way, what I've been saying here in this thread is what I think my opinion is right now. OK? It doesn't sound like we really disagree on anything.

Again, there are better drummers at playing the same part. I do agree with you there. When I was calling Chad's parts boring, I believe what I was saying is that any decent drummer could play the part, with the caveat that sure Chad probably plays it better than most. But the part bores me enough that I don't care how well it's played.
