I'm not trying to score points here, as seems to be the MO for most around here anymore. My fucking heart hurts too much, and frankly, I've given up on anyone having the decency to be affected by the deaths of schoolchildren in a burst of violence. It took one time for this to happen in Australia for the majority of people there to say "never again," and decide that guns in the hands of every individual probably isn't the best idea. Verb is right, that will never happen here, and I believe it's because this country lost its moral compass a long, long time ago.

First and foremost, stop using the need for a "solution" as some kind of excuse. There is no "solution", existing guns aren't going anywhere. But there are mitigations that will reduce, not eliminate, but reduce the rampant violence. Let's start there.

I currently have a third grader, and I had one when Sandy Hook happened, so this just really hits close to home. I'm already an empathetic person, but I remember coming home that day in 2012 and seeing our Christmas tree, and the presents underneath it, and breaking down thinking how those families' homes were just like mine, except those presents would never be opened.

I just hugged my son extra tight and long when he came home from school, knowing that there are 14 families out there who will never be able to do that again. Defenseless children, the most innocent among us. Strange to think how the same people who fight so hard to protect them when they're just bundles of cells do nothing to protect them once they're alive.

The 2nd Amendment is the most powerful amendment to the Constitution. In one stroke, it takes away all other rights any individual has. It’s very sad and even more strange that a majority of the anti-abortion people are also gun owners. They scream that the lives of the unborn must be protected at all costs but THEN if there’s even a hint their gun rights might be tweaked, not taken away, but tweaked, that’s totally unacceptable. Dead kids shot up in an elementary school is a perfectly fine price to pay so fucks like Mac can go wave his dick around and pretend to be GI Joe while praising the shooter for having the balls to go thru with their plan of killing a large number of people. But the poor woman who is brutally raped and gets pregnant from it, that child must be protected.

My father-in-law is a retired LEO. He's coming here in a couple weeks and wanted to pass along his service weapon to us to have for protection. I was OK with it, and my wife and I were planning to take gun safety classes. In light of this tragedy, I told her he can keep it. I don't want a gun around me or my family. I want nothing to do with any of it anymore. This country's fetishizing of guns and gratuitious violence is not something I can identify with, and I want no part in it.
