that's what 2nd ammendment lifers want people to believe. the only solution is to confiscate gun. its like the kapernick kneeling. no matter how many times it is explained to them they make up their own answersimple schoolboy wrote:A multi-generational campaign of firearm confiscation so we'll make a dent in this in say, 200 years?verb_to_trust wrote:When Push Comes to Shove it takes more than heartfelt pleas for change, you have to produce workable solutions. This is what I'm finding most disturbing about some people in this discussion. Not one ounce of being upset or feeling bad for someone else's situation.Superblood Wolfmoon wrote:And here we are at the crux of everything wrong with our society: a lack of empathy. I understand the statistics and how they apply to my own situation as well and am not "crippled with fear" (a phrase you tough guys love to employ against empathetic people) that a mass shooting will happen at my kid's school. I guess the difference between us is that I have empathy for other people's kids, not just my own. It's a trait that I value and nurture in my own kids. And more than someone's feelings or beliefs on a particular issue, it's a lack of empathy that I find the most abhorrent in a person.macphisto wrote:And no, I'm not crippled with fear thinking about my kids dying at school. We have an epidemic of hopelessness in this country, which I think is at the root of these things even more than guns. But nobody wants to do anything about that either.

Current press conference about it with Ted Cruz standing there, and the guy speaking first says "we have no mental health history on the individual" followed by "I spoke with all law enforcement and they all say the problem is mental health".
Why can't it be both? Why can't it be guns and mental health? If I have two employees that are so shitty that they are hurting my business, I address both problems, not just fire one and hope for the best with the other.

The number of people actually willing to set their comfortable lives on fire over this is pretty small, but any actual proposal other than voluntary hand over (with vanishingly small compliance) with random enforcement is insane.verb_to_trust wrote:Yeah they'd take out a few ATF guys with them
Public support for an actual door to door campaign would weaken when soccer moms understand the number of dogs the cops would shoot in the process of enforcement.

But look, I don't think it's a realistic solution to confiscate guns anyway. Were it up to me, their future sale/manufacture for civilians would be banned. I'd offer a voluntary buy-back program, and if you choose to keep your weapon, it's registered and it's an opportunity for the authorities to look into someone's history to determine whether they're a danger to society by having that weapon. Because I think one thing we can all perhaps agree on is that these weapons should not be in the hands of people who only wish to harm others or are mentally unstable/ill.
