More observations from the NRA convention:

Lots of families walking around the area. Like, whole families. Sometimes three generations of families at once. The kind who dress in matching shirts branded with tactical gear. Kids not much older than the victims of the recent shooting, families with teenagers. So many AR-15 logos.

I posted previously that gun fetishism makes me uncomfortable, but this somehow doesn't. I think the key here is family. It helps me understand the "fetishism" in context, and by proxy, the average dues paying NRA member. The evil that is the NRA is an abstract to these people, I think. The community is the thing for them. This is something that is literally passed down from generations, like a tradition understood and cherished. And it all comes back to family.

Of course I wish assault rifles weren't a thing, but in this context, it's hard to imagine any one of these thousands of responsible gun lovers across generations committing an atrocity. I understand the mental health/broken home factor republicans talk about when something like this happens. That can't be discounted in favor of villainizing a whole hobby culture, but at the same time, a lot of these gun owners need to read the room in the coming months/years/decades/generations and listen to anti-gun legislators to maybe understand that there can be a balance in all this somehow.
