Well, we could build ghost cities like China does or just let people starve to death like India. But this is not particular relevant to the shutdown, even by N&D standards.elliseamos wrote: 2) so it's okay for tax payers to pay for, and be at, war ad infinitum as long as it keeps americans working?

Re: Government Shutdown
my point is that not a minute's thought was given to not funding our military (and the workers and companies that butter their bread with tax payer dollars). not to mention, we do have people starving (those not getting their foodstamps) due to the shutdown. detroit's pretty close to ghost town, although that's pre-shutdown.broken iris wrote:Well, we could build ghost cities like China does or just let people starve to death like India. The sequester does cut defense spending:elliseamos wrote:my point is that not a minute's thought was given to not funding our military (and the workers and companies that butter their bread with tax payer dollars). not to mention, we do have people starving (those not getting their foodstamps) due to the shutdown. detroit's pretty close to ghost town, although that's pre-shutdown.broken iris wrote:Well, we could build ghost cities like China does or just let people starve to death like India. And China literally builds ghost towns to keep people employed:
http://gizmodo.com/chinas-replica-of-pa ... 1055641763
But the point is that this mess is not about actually about cutting spending. It's become solely about politicians egos and a misguided last ditch effort to stop the ACA that is risking the dollar's status as a reserve currency should we default in two weeks.

Heard yesterday that a bunch of people on a small contractor we used to work got fired rather than furloughed. They can reapply for their jobs when the government reopens, but "there may be salary and benefit adjustments associated with reentering an employment agreement."

we aren't talking about the sequester, so I don't see how that has anything to do with the shutdown.broken iris wrote:The sequester does cut defense spending:elliseamos wrote:my point is that not a minute's thought was given to not funding our military (and the workers and companies that butter their bread with tax payer dollars). not to mention, we do have people starving (those not getting their foodstamps) due to the shutdown. detroit's pretty close to ghost town, although that's pre-shutdown.broken iris wrote:Well, we could build ghost cities like China does or just let people starve to death like India. Alright, this is just taking the government shutdown too far!
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

Re: Government Shutdown
A moments thought was given to not funding the military. They hand tens of thousands of furloughs and special bill was passed so that active duty soldiers serving in combat zones still get paid. I was trying to point out the military is being reduced by the sequester and ramp down in war spending, but military spending is irrelevant to the shutdown. This is brinksmanship about their pride (and the ACA).elliseamos wrote: we aren't talking about the sequester, so I don't see how that has anything to do with the shutdown.

Re: Government Shutdown
There was talk on the left about how maybe this was just something the Tea Party needed to get out of its system. They would end this crap when the public got angry. It doesn't seem like the public is getting angry, though. And I'm really disheartened by the fact that most people I talk to think both parties are equally at fault.

I'm not suggesting that people should agree with me. I'm just some guy. They should pay more attention.

Re: Government Shutdown
I think between the sequester and the shutdown, the fact there is too much government that adds little or nothing to the country should becoming clearer to people. Initailly the sequester was supposed to be this poison pill that was doom and gllom to both sides. Now it's business as usual. The shutdown is largely having the same affect on people in the short term.
Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.

Actually I don't see how anyone can watch Fox. Hell even CNN can be hard to take. The sequester cuts, well life went on.malice wrote:you watch a lot of fox news, huh?surfndestroy wrote:I think between the sequester and the shutdown, the fact there is too much government that adds little or nothing to the country should becoming clearer to people. Are you saying you think there's too little government with the sequester cuts?
