At what point does it stop being True Detective? Pizzolatto is apparently not involved in writing the new season. Season three kind of blew up the occult conspiracy schtick.
I actually think Pizzolatto not being the writer gives this a chance of being good, but I also kind of think it makes it not True Detective. It feels a bit like I'm being tricked.

S1 is great.

S2 is terrible.

S3 is not bad, but also somehow worse than S2. Whaaaa?

No, not really, S2 is worse because it was truly goddamn awful but S3 leaves me with very few lingering memories. I at least remember hating S2

We’ve only seen the first season. Is there anything that ties the seasons together?

Don't forget Cary Joji Fukunaga. He had as much to do with Season 1 being great as anyone.

Truth.

In fact, I would argue that Fukunaga is ther only thing that elevated S1 over S2.

I like all the seasons, it's obviously S1>S3>S2, but they each have cool moments. I think it's the unique spin on the kidnapper-cult plot in S1 that really elevates it because the best acting was definitely Ali in S3.

Maybe the real True Detective is all of us figuring out what makes this show what it is?

I like all three of them, and absolutely love S1.
Also really like both of Pizzollato´s books, and Galveston is also a great movie.
