Re: New setlist dynamics
Apparently those Philly '09 shows were career-defining if you were there to keep track of scorecard girls, drink beer and gawk at Eddie. I was there to see a good concert, but left wondering WTF happened, and worried they might be their last-ever performances. Seemed like a rock-bottom moment to me.Norris wrote:no the performances were legit badspike wrote:Or did Beef just get in your head?Norris wrote:lol, with the exception of maybe the first encore on night 3, the entire philly 09 run was hot garbage

Re: New setlist dynamics
If you put the time in context, it was right up the alley of what they were about. They were largely in a happier and more tossed off state of mind. Obama was recently elected President, they seemed grievance-free and could just go out and do what they do. Backspacer is an album that struggles with a coherent message because they had nothing to rage against, and the shows from that period reflect a looser band more inclined to smile and enjoy the party rather than confront the world with some direct focus. So the shows have this unfocused nature to them, particularly Eddie, who often went off the cuff a bit.
It can be cloying for someone looking for a Pearl Jam show circa 96, or even 03, but it had its own charms knowing the band was having as good a time and you were throwing out rarities, well rehearsed or not, and sort of just going with it. Philly 4 is the ultimate embodiment of this - so you either love or hate this show - though I would posit it is no less sloppy than say State College in 03. I still count it as a definitive performance from them.

I saw PJ 3 times in 09 and honestly couldn’t tell you the difference between that and 06 or ‘11.

The other guys got messed up and Mike was laughing at them or what?
I find it hard to believe Stone "Rock Professional At Work" Gossard would play a show half in the bag. Or Jeff.

Wait WHAT? A new drummer? Was it for all shows or just a couple? How did he do??Strat wrote:stip, did you know they have a new drummer for the tour?stip wrote:I didn't realize the tour had started! It's a boot problem.
But really, I haven't seen a show since the Lightning Bolt tour! As long as I get a good show I'll be incredibly happy

At Oakland 1 and 2, Josh Klinghoffer and Richard Stuverud (Three Fish, Tres Mtns etc.) shared drumming duties, except for Yellow Ledbetter on night 1 which was played by a fan from the crowd.
At Fresno, Josh and Richard played again and were joined by original Pearl Jam drummer Dave Krusen who played a good chunk of the set.
Then Jeff got COVID and they cancelled the two remaining shows of the leg.
I fully expect Matt will be back for the upcoming Euro shows.

I just saw this...crazy. I have to hear the Krusen set. I've long thought Matt Cameron's style leaves me cold compared to the old showsBirds in Hell wrote:Matt got COVID partway through the west coast leg of the tour.mikejasond wrote:Wait WHAT? Seems like you can pretty much count on DotC, Quick Escape and SBWM at shows. Feels like anything more from Gigaton is "special."

Yeah, and Im actually a bit dissappointed by that.epilogue wrote:Seems like you can pretty much count on DotC, Quick Escape and SBWM at shows. Feels like anything more from Gigaton is "special."
Also.. I dont mind a 2 hour show. But find a bit frustrating that they skip 4-5 songs because Ed talks too much..

7 Ten songs last night? That's kind of embarrassing.

And then the obligatory Alive, Black, Better Man, Given to Fly, Daughter and Even Flow. That’s half the set right there.epilogue wrote:Seems like you can pretty much count on DotC, Quick Escape and SBWM at shows. Feels like anything more from Gigaton is "special."

Re: New setlist dynamics
For their mainset of 17 songs (X) PJ always uses the following formula:
X = (10 songs from Ten/Vs/Vitalogy) + Given to Fly & DTE + 1 non-album track/lost dog/cover + 3 songs of your latest release + 1 song from No Code/Yield/Binaural/RA/ST/BS/LB *
*= add latest here when it has a followup
Note: when setlists grow the formula remains intact. For instance..when they play 34 songs you can double each number.

By "always" do you mean just the 5 or whatever shows they've played this year with Matt Cameron?

Jack Irons left the band in 1998, in part, because he couldn’t handle the length (and possibly the variety) of the live sets.bodysnatcher wrote:I bet if jack irons was the drummer they’d play more cool stuff

Re: New setlist dynamics
I don't mind the length of the setlists, just wish they included more Yield-S/T tunes. Drop 3-4 songs from their first three albums to make room.
