Re: Albums of 2022
I've only heard a handful of songs so far. Whatever's available to stream. I thought this was just another noisy indie pop girl thing at first, but they seem to be able to consistently to nail a certain sound that's been missing for me from groups like Wet Leg or Soccer Mommy. I like those artists plenty, but Horsegirl feels like a true throwback to used bins at CD Warehouse and late nights listening to Lunar Rotation on 107.5 KTBZ.

i'm sure i mentioned this earlier, but if you like Cola, check out Tim Darcy's solo album, Saturday Night, if you haven't already.

fwiw, if you can't find it at your local record store, it's about $2 cheaper from Matador.washing machine wrote:Dad, did you see they released a 7" "Billy" single with a cover of "History Lesson Pt. 2" as the b-side? I'm sliding into my local record store's DMs post haste.

I'm getting around to the Lenderman this weekend too. So much good music this year. I bet dad wishes he had waited a month like jorge advised him to do before making his first of 2022 list.dad wrote:fuck yeah.Mickey wrote:Slept on this one for a while but fucking loving it, alongside horsegirl.dad wrote:man, this one by MJ Lenderman came out of nowhere and surprised me. Re: Albums of 2022
I think I just turned my local record store clerk on to Horsegirl amidst some hardcore instagram DMing about their inventory. Picture this: a 39-year old dad chatting with a 50-something y/o record store lifer in Houston about some new gold soundz coming from three Gen-Z dissonance savants out of Chicago. And they say the music retail industry is dead.

i'm taking a brief break from Horsegirl so i don't overdo it.
giving a listen to this one, which pitchfork (go ahead and laugh) recommended.
i dig it so far. man, what the hell is going on in the south that is producing these great records? first MJ Lenderman, now this?

Re: Albums of 2022
Today is three new ones of varying degrees of success:
Michael Franti & Spearhead - Follow Your Heart: this is basically the second straight album from Michael Franti that doesn’t move the needle either way. Some decent songs in here but nothing to get particularly excited about. His early work is fantastic, but it feels like a long time he’s been coasting on trying to sound dance hall for the masses.
Fanatic Negrito - White Jesus Black Problems: this is good and creative. He is still building on that blues/funk sound he’s been pursuing for the last 7 years. Sounds like he is collaborating with other singers more, but the songs seem like they’ll reveal more and more on repeat listens.
Lettuce - Unify: it’s funky, it’s jazzy, it’s fun. Not sure I could sit through 70 minutes straight but it’s great to mix this in a bit to get a different flavor.

Reid have you heard the Horegirl songs that came out over the last year that aren't included on the album? Sea Life Sandwich Boy, Ballroom Dance Scene, and Forecast are among their best songs.
