I think it's suppose to show a lack of correlation between the number of guns present and gun-related homicide rates to show it's culture not guns causing the killing, but it doesn't really show that since gun ownership is not linear, as The Guardian reports:

part of the 3% of American adults who collectively own 130m firearms, half of the nation’s total stock of civilian guns.

That top 14% of gun owners – a group of 7.7m people, or 3% of American adults – own between about eight and 140 guns each. The average is 17.
