Worrying about upsetting the established canon is a fool's errand. The thing is already a ramshackle, patched-together mess. They should just approach Star Wars as an interesting world from which to craft stories and not fuss so much about continuity.

Have Obi Wan fight and kill and eat Vader. Who cares

It’s not a restaurant. It’s a buffet

But complaining loudly and relentlessly at the other customers, isn’t gonna help your cause.

If you don’t like it why don’t you buy a bib and fuck off back to your moms basement.

If Joey can take it, so can you, dime. Ensign is the only person not enjoying himself.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

Inversely, Ensign9’s (assuming Dime is addressing him here) expectations around Stars Wars writing and execution are strangely high. As you said, it’s always been a patchworked mess, not some carefully crafted storyline like Lost or GoT. Well, the first several seasons of GoT… those last couple were more like Star Wars.

One of the biggest plot points of the original trilogy ("No...I am your father!") was a retcon that so contradicted the first movie that they had to add a line to the third movie ("...from a certain point of view") for it to all make sense. They have always been making it up as they go along.

I think many of Ensign's critiques are valid (I am fairly sure you wrote about the tired plot structures and such, Ensign, which is what makes this a hard watch for me), but I point this out to also agree with spike--if you had fun with the original trilogy, it's sort of disingenuous to be too hard on the retconning here.

Guys, they changed what the force was between the first two movies. Everything's going to be fine.

"Change" might not be the right word, I think I am being overdramatic. But in Star Wars, the force was about discipline and awareness, and tapping into it was as much about confidence as it was about "using a power" (perhaps more so). It wasn't until Empire that people started lifting rocks. One could say it "evolved" over the course of the movies, or more of it was "revealed"--but, really, it's been added to in each and every film in a similar way to the retcon discussion that complaining about how it's used (as many people do in the sequel trilogy) is laughable.

One of my favorite readings of Star Wars--that is, just the first movie--is that if you ignore all the other movies and properties, you can imagine it as a world where the first doesn't exist, and the Jedi are just con men that convince people it does.
