Has it always been this way where if you lean to one particular side you have to absolutely 100% locked in to every single take on every single issue?
Why can’t someone call themselves a Dem and be for gun control, abortion access, etc. but also be for reduced taxes. Why can’t someone be democratic but acknowledge that a Repub has at least a couple of good ideas.

I think this depends on who you know / are following? I'd say most of the people I know fall somewhere on the ideological spectrum without adhering to every single position of each side's major party (in the case of the US, Democrats vs. Republicans).
