This has been going on for so long now that it’s been five full years since the AP changed its pronouns policy in reporting. Five+ years of identified personal pronouns in emails, and of people meeting other people who go by “they” or whatever.

So my question to you is: when does the fun start? How long does it take for this to begin demonstrably crumbling the fragile, chalk dust walls of human communication? If not now, when?

This isn’t the first time that you’ve asserted this theory. It’s meaningless to me, because it is detached from any presumption of requirements of evidence or timeframe. Do you think that this reformation of language will cripple our ability to understand each other in the next five years? That would be super useful information to have, because it would mean that five years from now you’ll either know that you were right or you’ll have a good reason to reflect on why your predictions were wrong.

Do you think it’ll take longer than that? Maybe more than a decade? If that’s the case, who even cares? Plenty of awful things are coming for us before then.

In terms of the timeframe of corruption of language, it's already effecting us today. Look at the recent Bette Middler blowup as a high profile example. She clearly didnt mean that to be anti-trans, she meant it to be pro-woman and an attack on the patriarchal concept of reducing a woman to her body parts, but the colloquial meaning of the words she used is so screwed up she was attacked for using them. Or the whole 'What is a Women?' thing. Le Grande Douche Matt Walsh sat there with a dean at major university and he was using the term to refer to biological sex and she to a gender identity. They were completely unable to speak to each other and yet they both simultaneously correct. 'Groomer', another good example. Or even more basically, 'sexuality', as used in this video:

If we cannot agree on what "teach sexuality to preschoolers" means, how can we move towards creating or even talk to each other about an actual inclusive environment?

It was, of course, the very old who first started using the word "cool" to mean something was popular and new. Just as it has been primarily the old people who in recent decades have de-gendered the word "guys." Who can forget how the 50-somethings in 18th century Boston suddenly began using gay...which was at the time more commonly used in writing to describe 'happy' than the word 'happy'....as joke-and-a-wink slang for people who are super down to fuck? Or how 150 years later mostly old people would further adopt it as a means of referring to homosexuality without their parents knowing what they meant.

These are all examples of the very ordinary bumbling conversations that happen around a hotly debated current events issue. Don't give me a celebrity wading into a conversation on social media and stumbling, and then hold it up as an example of the sky falling. That's the oldest social media story there is. Don't give me a propagandist and a gender studies professor being obtuse with each other, and treat it as evidence of a catastrophic disintegration of communication among a population.

If you want to assert that the adoption of a linguistic change is a danger to society, then talk to me about the danger to society. Talk to me about how you perceive this collapse happening, and how long you imagine it taking to happen. Give me some understanding of how you imagine this domino chain playing out. Because this looks no more harmful than when that one guy you worked with in 2015 thought "Netflix and chill" just meant "watch Netflix," and went around saying it for a few days until he learned the truth and felt embarrassed.

I'm not sure I follow on this one. Groomer is a word that was popularized for a specific purpose and message, based on historical use, and everyone understands what it is intended to mean.
