Tell me why that is wrong. Tell me how this doesn't lead to a Tower of Babel effect where innocent, well-meaning, and decent people can no longer understand each other. Tell me why those people won't resort to censoring their words and ultimately their thoughts for fear of crossing some high subjective, coded language taboo and hurting others. I am a Morlock so use small words.

Would the phrase "Defund the Police" qualify?McParadigm wrote: These are all examples of the very ordinary bumbling conversations that happen around a hotly debated current events issue. Justice?
Equity?
Racism?
With these terms, aren't we all basically talking about different things now in the broader culture? And doesn't that greatly inhibit us from actually making progress on these/them?

Lots of vague gesturing to unpack hereBurtReynolds wrote:
Entire 1st World GDPs are spent "evolving" language to suit the interests of extremely powerful people. They've had decades to perfect it. You're kidding yourself if you think much of this is ultimately originating from or powered by some goofy teenagers. "Language: Natural. Organic. It evolves. Thank you, gentlemxn."
Language evolves. It also changes - and is changing - in other, more nefarious ways. Yes, young people come up with code words to get around prohibitions all the time. It's also true that corporations try to latch on to new slang to sell products.
But that's not all or even most of what's happening here.
Put that in your manifesto thread and suck it down, Mickey!

I think terms like “birthing people” or “menstruating people” and such are are too much, kind of dumb. But why do people get so worked up? I’ve yet to ever see someone offended by the term “woman” in real life.

The argument is that using the term women in a debate about abortion excludes people with vaginas that don't identify as women.Rob wrote:I think terms like “birthing people” or “menstruating people” and such are are too much, kind of dumb. Right, I get it. I just don’t think we’re at the point (or ever really will be) where the terms “men” and “women” (male/female) are in jeopardy or considered offensive to anyone but the most hardcore activist types.JuanHamm wrote:The argument is that using the term women in a debate about abortion excludes people with vaginas that don't identify as women.Rob wrote:I think terms like “birthing people” or “menstruating people” and such are are too much, kind of dumb.
