Super laid back cafe vibe, super affordable price point, awesome owners and staff, early adoption (1999-2001) of the local food movement. Was something of a cultural hub for my provincial hometown. Every restaurant has lacked in comparison for one reason or another.
sounds pretty dope.

And better than Doug Flutie’s Hail Mary pass to beat Miami in ‘84.

My wife and I watched this whole thing today. Ep 7 was my favorite. Felt 5 minutes long. The lead’s AA monologue in the finale was super impressive.

This is a show I enjoyed the whole time. It felt almost like a documentary. That said, I wouldn’t insist any of my friends watch it, and in two years I’ll probably forget that I did.

Richie was the best. He sounds so much like John McEnroe to me. I can’t see that actor without thinking of him eating Alison Williams’ ass on Girls.

Good call. Technically I've never been paid to work in a kitchen since I've always gone the FOH route, but I've jumped on the expo, helped with prep, and had many a post shift drink with sous chefs and and line cooks. They're a unique and intense bunch but, yeah, that was a caricature for sure.

On the same note, I turned to my wife (who is also Industry people) after episode 7 and said "I hope people who've never worked in a restaurant don't think it's like that every day."

They're a unique and intense bunch but, yeah, that was a caricature for sure. Closest I ever came to working with a guy like that was at this farm-to-table place with a Danish chef who did not disguise his hate for servers. I asked him a question about the octopus once during service and he grabbed a whole, raw octopus, put it in a stainless steel bowl, slid it across the expo at me and sarcastically sneered that I should take it to the table and show the guests what it looked liked.

On the same note, I turned to my wife (who is also Industry people) after episode 7 and said "I hope people who've never worked in a restaurant don't think it's like that every day." Those kinds of shit shows happen, and I felt every bit of that episode, even from my vantage point on the floor side of things, but more often than not things run smoothly and the stress happens in little micro-pops and mini skirmishes here and there.

What I really, really like about these characters is the way the shakeup at Original Beef plays out for the different staff. You've got the hardened lifers like Tina who have been doing this for years and have a hard time adapting to a new system built by someone much younger, then you've got the super impressionable creative types like Marcus who let their inspiration consume them at expense of the big picture. You've got Sydney, who is so fucking smart but is just learning how to lead and get the most out of these two ends of the spectrum. THAT, to me, is the most interesting element to this show. How leadership and work ethic and humility and integrity and teamwork come together in weird, toxic ways sometimes.

I think my wife & I are on episode 6 next (maybe 7). Great show, and the Carmen/Sydney dynamic is my favorite part of the show. They’re a good pair.

My wife & I just finished this today, and yeah - episode 7 is bonkers (awesome, heart pounding), and the AA speech was really something, I shed a few tears.

What a fantastic show. Easy to love these characters (except for Richie at first, who I knew would come around to be loved as well). This show really isn't afraid to draw a scene out, despite it being a pretty fast paced show most of the time. Love the balance they struck.

Thanks again, RM, as stated I hadn't heard of this prior to clicking on this thread. Homerun.
