What movies are you watching?

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Again, it's been a long time. But from what I remember at the time -- the performances were all outstanding, thoughtful and engaging narrative shifts, great writing, wonderful visuals, and they way stuff connected really hit me. The shepherd boy and the gun and the shooting. Just really landed perfectly.

I also adore Alejandro González Iñárritu. I've loved all of his movies that I've seen. The guy just hits homers. So, there's obviously something in his aesthetic that speaks to me. Perhaps I'm biased or prone to like Babel for that reason?

I actually agree with all of that! I think on the whole I still felt like its position was too obvious, but that doesn’t detract from those awesome elements you listed.

I think if I thought more deeply about globalization as a theme and then tried to weave that through several movies of that decade, maybe I would feel the same way you do. But I'm not sure I've considered that theme (here in Babel and further out among cinema of the time) the way you have. Or maybe the better way to put it is, it didn't bother me as a theme at the time and I didn't chose to look at it from multiple angels at the time.

But I've also so never been someone who cares much about trends in that way. Like so what if there are 25 movies over ten years about natural disasters. Are they good? I think thinking of them on an individual level and not part of the the larger pop-cultural conversation helps me.
