Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I liked Babel enough when I saw it and it's clearly a well-made film but I think I align with trag in thinking that it is self-consciously profound in its staging of human interrelation as its primary theme (see: title) but that what it actually stages is relatively banal. For my money, Amores Perros is a WAY better film, in part because restricting the action to DF knocks the corniness of the interconnectedness down significantly.

Would be curious what other films from that period you'd put in the globalization camp, trag, and where you'd draw the period boundaries (I think of globalization as a 90s concept, though that's clearly what Babel is thinking about).

I think you could make a side/sub category of the "everything is interrelated" movie: Crash, Babel, Amores Perros, Magnolia. I'm sure there are others.

Blood Diamond feels more like Hotel Rwanda to me--singular instance of poverty/human rights abuses that you (American viewer) should feel bad about, and perhaps are somewhat implicated in.

“Everything is interrelated” seems like a list of Altman-descendent films, of which I’d put Magnolia and Amores Perros.

“Everything is interrelated and you the viewer should leave this film feeling guilty about the implications of your choices in the context of the global capitalist complex” is more what I’m thinking of with this list.

Yeah I can see the difference, the latter is more 90s/00s (and why Altman wouldn't really fit).

The dude is very closed off, which is why the connection wasn't all fireworks. That seemed right to me. Just wish they got a different actress for the part.

From what I recall it just felt abrupt. This movie also had weird scene transitions that felt abrupt.
