not gonna happen
people like jimi hendrix, john lennon, elliott smith etc. are untouchable
Smith kind of qualifies actually.
Terribly sad all round, but true.

I know a lot of people feel this way. So in a way he’s not even that revered now.

Until recently I thought people really liked Elliot Smith, but I don't think that's the case anymore

I would argue Elliott Smith would be more revered had he not died, cause his best work was yet to come.

Well, I'd compare the album he was unable to complete before his death to his previous albums, for starters. He was getting better, more creative, and he showed no signs of slowing his output.

or take these two songs for example.. incomplete, unreleased, unfinished songs.. he had loads of these that would have benefitted from better production and time, and I'd still consider them among his best the way they are

Do you subscribe to the "Elliott Smith was murdered" theory, tree_?

I think it's possible but there's not enough information to sway me in either direction. We do know he was often struggling enough to have killed himself, and that he attempted it at least once.
