Murdering a musician who has essentially been writing audio suicide notes for years…the perfect crime

Does anyone really think about Buckley except a few Gen Xers?spike wrote:Jeff Buckley
Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like he hasn't had much cultural staying power.
I guess it doesn't help that his catalogue was only one (full) album when he died.
I really like his music though, that unfinished second album is great (better and more idiosyncratic than Grace).

His hallelujah cover is still fairly well known in the US but that’s about it. Even most gen x ppl would likely only vaguely recognize Last Goodbye.

He was massive here in Australia and heavily influenced a whole generation of singers.
Kevin Morby sings about him on his last album. Maybe there will be a resurgence.

I feel like Buckley's cover of Hallelujah has become something like a modern standard, totally disconnected from him as an artist.bart wrote:His hallelujah cover is still fairly well known in the US but that’s about it.

Yeah it’s more connected to Shrek than anything else at this point

I've never seen Shrek, I had no idea there was any connection.

I haven’t either but it’s in the movie. The thought of listening to Mike Meyers sing Leonard Cohen covers is among the least appealing things I can imagine so I doubt I’ll ever hear it

The Jeff Buckley version of "Hallelujah" is not in Shrek. I think they use the Rufus Wainwright version

I was thinking the same.Jorge wrote:The Jeff Buckley version of "Hallelujah" is not in Shrek. I think they use the Rufus Wainwright version
Also Shrek is pretty good! Better than Midsommar and The Force Awakens.
And they say that a hero could save us

I always found the "best singer ever" claims for JB to be a bit much. Super talented vocalist especially for 90s alternative rock but... ?

probably not "best" b/c of the length of his career, but his range is insane

Re: What artist would not be as revered if they hadn't died
He was an outstanding artist but I don't really enjoy listening to his music anymore. He was a little too adept at conveying despair. The circumstances surrounding his untimely death only further cement this. The Argonaut wrote:Who doesn't like Elliott Smith? Just... fucking brutal.
