The best mask is the mask you'll wear.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

B.A.5 variant is the new wave in parts of Canada. Highly transmissible and hospitals are prepping for more patients while struggling to keep staff.

Thankfully, covid cases are mild in the overwhelming majority of people who get the virus, vaccinated or not.

My family of four got it recently. 2-3 days of mild flu symptoms for the adults, followed by a few days of clearing out mucus. Kids (both under 6 y/o) sick for less than 2 days. No shots required. I’ve had at least 3 flus n my life that felt considerably worse than covid.

Any infectious disease control specialist will tell you that ventilation is more important than masking or distancing when trying to stop the indoor spread of an airborne virus, especially one like covid which primarily travels on aerosols (really tiny) and not droplets (much larger). Although not an option in all climates, improving ventilation can be as easy as opening windows and putting fans in classrooms.

How do your arguments about the other failures of the public school system (walls, pipes, food) apply here?

They don't have money for fans, working windows, or larger air-moving equipment.

The government has money to pay for whatever the government (the people) choose to borrow in order to pay for. That’s the system. That’s how we get money to pay for things like covid shots. We borrow the money and future generations owe that back plus interest.

I’m not arguing to divert existing school funds towards improved ventilation. I’m arguing for increased funding to schools to maximize safety in the most logical and effective way possible.

Yes, Bi, the allocation of money is disgusting. It's also not the same everywhere. Many of the things driving that steep increase in funding is new buildings, in places that can afford it. Likewise more admins in places that can afford it. Many other districts have old buildings, with inadequate staffing, and admins cycle thru year after year (for more pay & better working conditions elsewhere). Add in Charter Schools and the funding disparity becomes even worse for a region. I'd actually be curious if those charts include charters, because it would drive things even more apart (Teacher Pay vs. Admins vs. Overall Funding)

Add “ineffective” and we’re good.

I mean… paper and cloth masks forced on children…for what??? how fucking dare they? How dare anyone be in favor of mask mandates for children because of covid. That is not liberal. That is radical.
My daughter is 2 and my goal is to never allow anyone to put her in mask because of Covid.

Are we finally approaching consensus in this thread?

We all agree: Pay teachers more.

This 9xx page thread was good for something after all.

Anyone see the wastewater data?

Cases aren't up because everyone tests at home and never gets further care or gets tested in a way that gets reported, but wastewater testing has COVID prevalence up even higher than the first Omicron spike.

As a person who got kicked in the ass by this shit recently, I can endorse masking indoors.
