I think mine was The Usual Suspects. The twist ending, the concept of an unreliable narrator, the unusual structure. I watched it on DVD when I was 12 and these were all very new ideas for me

I need to rewatch this soon.
What other movies fall under the category of “masterful execution of a half-baked idea?”

Sixth Sense got spoiled for me by the fucking ad that was playing before the movie started.

For me, this sort of revelation also happened around age 12 or 13, so it can be dated to approximately the year 2000. I'll give equal credit to: The Matrix, Monty Python, and M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense & Unbreakable).tragabigzanda wrote:Thinking about this after listening to a podcast: what was the first movie that really reframed what movies could do? Not “what was the first masterpiece you saw,” but one that challenged your ideas about the medium?
I also saw both Fargo and Face/Off when I was like nine years old, so they also may have given me an inkling early on

You've gotta feel for Gen X. They had to grow up watching absolute garbage movies like Dead Poets Society and Breakfast Club. It was all they had, the poor bastards
