Could you just up and move?

Post by daft twat »

Someone I don’t know from work just announced she’s moving to San Antonio (from Minnesota). I’m a little jealous, not of SA particularly, but of the ability to uproot and go. I did it after college, but now it seems impossible. My kids are in high school and middle school, my parents (200 miles away) are in their 70s, and I’m starting my 20th year at the same school this fall. I wouldn’t say I feel trapped, but I do feel like moving a significant distance is out of the question at this juncture.

There is a hog in me . . . a snout and a belly . . . a machinery for eating and grunting . . . a machinery for sleeping satisfied in the sun—I got this too from the wilderness and the wilderness will not let it go.

There is an eagle in me and a mockingbird . . . and the eagle flies among the Rocky Mountains of my dreams and fights among the Sierra crags of what I want . . . and the mockingbird warbles in the early forenoon before the dew is gone, warbles in the underbrush of my Chattanoogas of hope, gushes over the blue Ozark foothills of my wishes—And I got the eagle and the mockingbird from the wilderness.

O, I got a zoo, I got a menagerie, inside my ribs, under my bony head, under my red-valve heart—and I got something else: it is a man-child heart, a woman-child heart: it is a father and mother and lover: it came from God-Knows-Where: it is going to God-Knows-Where—For I am the keeper of the zoo: I say yes and no: I sing and kill and work: I am a pal of the world: I came from the wilderness.

From SoCal the PNW, right? I’d love to hear more about what prompted this and how you’re feeling about it.

I've up and moved in the middle of the night a couple of times.

Outside of my lease, I have no attachments to places I live.

friends of ours who currently live in dallas fw area are in the process of selling their business, and moving up to the PNW.

I’d have to wait until my kids are out of the house to even consider a move like that. But that’s only because they still spilt time between me and their mom.

definitely envy those who just do it.

Mrs Wease keeps telling me once the kids are gone we can move to NYC. I doubt it will happen tho. When I was single or before we had kids, it would’ve been no problem to go somewhere else tho.

Sometimes I wonder if I could move to a sleepy, one-horse town in the middle of nowhere midwest and be a very important person. A man who is involved in key decisions and is respected by everyone. Just like in the movies.

Would be difficult. Have thought about moving back to my home town a bit. There’s my job, my wife’s jobs, selling the apartment (which will probably happen anyway). Think we will stay in Oslo.

I've mentioned it before, but work for me would be the only mitigating factor. I love my job. And changing careers to work in something other than theater doesn't sound super appealing to me at this point in my life. But otherwise, picking up and moving wouldn't be difficult outside of that. And our friend base here, of course.
