yeah, i have a hard time listening to some metal in general. i just think it's cool they're from here and seem to be getting some decent press. good for them.

I'd often call it noise rock more than metal, though it's getting there in terms of the darkness, raw anger, riffage; it puts me in the 90s in parts too: The Melvins, Jesus Lizard, Mudhoney; it's got that kind of lack of refinement and precision that I associate more with those than with metal

this is a good example of when I appreciate looseness instead of precision: when it sounds purposeful and you couldn't imagine it another way

The singer seems obviously influenced by David Yow. But the musical similarities to TJL end there, IMO

I disagree, but regardless, my point was mainly that I don't simply hear "metal" in their music; their vocal style is more in line with a particularly aggressive "Debaser" by the Pixies than with, say, the death growl

so yeah I'd say metal is an influence of course, but just as much as those noise rock / post-punk / post-hardcore influences

anyway the record is really diverse and does a lot of stuff metal would not do, imo

Generally I'm not much into hip hop but have always had a soft spot for Lupe Fiasco's 'Kick Push' from back in the day. I introduced my son to it (he was about 13 at the time I guess) and he often comments that it led him to check the album out and how much he enjoyed it. I felt like a good Dad when he told me that.

So I read a comment somewhere yesterday that Lupe's released a new album and thought I'd check it out. Super glad that I did. I love the sound of his voice and his delivery, and matched to some sweet jazzy beats this album is (for want of a better word) dope. The thing that turns me off most with a lot of modern hip hop/rap is the language. I actually surprise myself by saying it - I sound like my dad. I'm no prude at all, and I am down with anger and the like, but I am so far removed from a lot of the lyrics these days that I lose interest immediately someone starts banging on about the usual shit (guns, hoes, constant n bombs etc). I'm really glad to come across something that is a little toned down lyrically, and imo is far more interesting for it.

This is up there as one of my albums of the year.
