Yep. And it really is the better for it. Other than that, no studio trickery.liebzz wrote:Did they splice it from multiple shows?wease wrote:Wait until you realize what they did with You Don’t Love Me.

Yeah I think I pointed out something similar on the 1970 Fillmore East shows. I don’t think it affects the status of this particular live album.

The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings - Part I: 3/12/71 Early Show
Now that we’ve heard the finished product, the seminal At the Fillmore East live album, time to jump into the shows they came from. Take 1 is the early show, where none of the songs on the final live album came from, but this one no less a barnburner than the album itself. I believe the unexpected guest musicians made some sort of impact on the ability to properly record the main instruments, resulting in all of these being scrapped in favor of future takes…but it doesn’t take away from the show itself. Everything is absolute fire, especially the last two songs: In Memory of Elizabeth Reed and You Don’t Love Me. The addition of horns works for these remarkably well considering how many notes are being played at any given moment by the main band. Killer start to this.
Set list: Statesboro Blues, Trouble No More, Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’, Done Somebody Wrong, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, You Don’t Love Me

Re: The Allman Brothers Band - A Career Retrospective
The horns were lost most of the time and all through Liz Reed. It was terrible. There’s a lesson there: never trust that the drummer’s friends can actually play at the same level as your band
There’s a reason Dowd made them lose them for the remaining shows

I think they are lost in the recording but imagine it worked during the show.
The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings - Part II: 3/12/71 Late Show
As suspected, the late show in life will usually topple the early show - in large part because everyone maybe is looser, the time constraints aren’t the same, they are motivated to top whatever came before, who knows…
Done Somebody Wrong and the last 12 minutes of You Don’t Love Me make it onto the live album, but really the run of Elizabeth Reed, You Don’t Love Me, Whipping Post, then Hot’Lanta is basically the best I think I have heard yet - an hour of pure Allman bliss.
Set list: Statesboro Blues, Trouble No More, Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’, Done Somebody Wrong, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, You Don’t Love Me, Whipping Post, Hot’Lanta

Yeah, I’ll do the RM thing and rank em once I am through.
The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings - Part III: 3/13/71 Early Show
Show 3 of 4. From this one, we get Statesboro Blues, the first seven minutes of You Don’t Love Me and In Memory of Elizabeth Reed on the official live album. They certainly all belong there. I might have qualms with trading Elizabeth Reed with the night show the day before, but they are so consistent that I certainly can’t hold a grudge over it. This is probably the least memorable show so far despite that, and ultimately my thoughts dwell on the second two-thirds of You Don’t Love Me, which is just a bit weird given how they’d been performing it. Still great but something somewhat off there. Still quite a solid show nonetheless.
Set list: Statesboro Blues, Trouble No More, Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’, Done Somebody Wrong, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, You Don’t Love Me, Whipping Post

No, no. I’m wrong. It’s the last show that used Whipping Post, Hot ‘Lanta and Stormy Monday.
There’s a nice treat in that last show on the 13th as well.

The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings - Part IV: 3/13/71 Late Show
Once again, the late show is the show stopper. From this one, we’ll get Stormy Monday, Hot’Lanta, and Whipping Post. The whole show is pretty excellent, from the rockin’ Statesboro Blues, straight blues of One Way Out (I don’t feel like doing the homework but this sounds exactly like another song - Southbound! It’s Southbound!), killer Stormy Monday, Whipping Post is the best of the bunch, Mountain Jam is a sprawling sometimes psychedelic jam, and closing with an encore of Drunken Hearted Boy with Elvin Bishop that is some great blues. Quite an enjoyable ride through the shows that would comprise one of the greatest live albums of all time.
Set list: Statesboro Blues, One Way Out, Stormy Monday, Hot’Lanta, Whipping Post, Mountain Jam
Encore: Drunken Hearted Boy (w/Elvin Bishop)
As for these 4 shows (the last show at Fillmore East a few months later is next): I would rate them either 4, 2, 1, 3, or 2, 4, 1, 3 - the two late shows were really phenomenal.

Re: The Allman Brothers Band - A Career Retrospective
One of the earliest One Way Out performances. Still working things out. It’ll be a lot smoother when the band records it again in June at the last ever Fillmore shows.
I don’t really think it sounds anything like Southbound other than they’re both up-tempo, boogie type tunes.
Mountain Jam is, of course, the version included on Eat A Peach.
My rankings are 3-4-2-1. The horns just kill the first show for me.

The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings - Part V: 6/27/71
Here we have the final show ever played at the Fillmore East to close out this extensive set of shows. Taken a bit more than three months after the shows that would encompass At Fillmore East, this show finds the band very loose and yet completely on their game. One Way Out is quite a bit more developed and where I think I got the Southbound reference (it could be another song but I swear the riff structure and some of the lyrics are from another Allman Brothers song). Elizabeth Reed is pretty damn great here too. Hot’Lanta and Whipping Post both quite great, but I was most blown away by the closing You Don’t Love Me - the band once again topping itself, especially in this furious finish. Damn this was great.
Set list: Statesboro Blues, Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’, Done Somebody Wrong, One Way Out, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Midnight Rider, Hot’Lanta, Whipping Post, You Don’t Love Me

Yeah. Some say it wasn’t recorded, some say it was. No one can find the tapes if it was…super nintendo chalmers wrote:June 26 is supposedly THE GRAIL OF ALL GRAILS.liebzz wrote:The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings - Part V: 6/27/71

I think it was taped. Why would they record the one show and not the other? Somebody, somewhere has a copy of it. They may not even realize it.

It might just be a different song I am hearing. When I get to it I will pass it along.
No no. I totally screwed this up. I was driving my wife’s car, which had the Greatest Hits 69-79 in it…and not paying much attention to it, I heard the actual One Way Out from 6/27/71 from that disc and just confused it with having already heard it in the chronology somewhere else…so it’s just a better version of the same song, not another song. My brain is fried.
