there are plenty of health issues people deal with that aren't so obvious, and it's not OK to shame people for any of them

yes they can occur together, but it's never true (hence my "mutually exclusive") that they inherently cause each other, by definition; and that's what fat acceptance is about

you can be fat, you can be thin, you can have brown, black, blonde or blue hair, be 7 feet or two feet tall, but it's never true that any of these things *are the inherent cause* of ill health as a whole *or* that they will necessarily appear together

That is not what mutually exclusive means.

I don't see why it's a problem to discuss BMI. It's a starting point.

"Your BMI is over 30, but you have no other health conditions. Yay!"

"Your BMI is over 30, maybe if you brought it down we could cut back on your blood pressure medication and your cholesterol would come down a bit."

BMI is a pretty crude heuristic, especially for women.
