House of the Dragon (2022, HBO2theMAX)

6 weeks ago I was in the room to witness my wife give birth to our daughter. There were multiple complications & it was an intensely harrowing, unforgettable experience. Mom & baby are doing fine now, but I’m soooo glad a friend hipped me to the birth scene in this episode. Wife & I were casual GoT fans, planned on watching this. On friend’s recommendation it’s a hard pass now! Never need to see a birth scene in filmed entertainment again.

Congratulations man, that is awesome to hear. I tipped my younger sister off too who's expecting in a few months and she definitely passed on this episode. I'm not usually the squeamish type but this scene got to me a bit.

I think there’s at least one element in canon that leaves some room for Aegon’s conquest being more than his marriage suggestions being ignored and general insults from the 7 kingdoms forcing him to exact revenge against the realm.

I consider that Viserys I is adding in a reason, but the Prince that was Promised was a long held prophecy, so it could track. Keep in mind that Viserys rode Balerion the Black Dread as a child until the dragon died of old age; he has a connection to Aegon

As I've read and listened to reactions to this over the course of the week, I am a little bit more on board with it. The X-Ray Vision podcast had a good segment on it, as they tried to trace how it was passed down to Hot D through the first few Targaryen kings. Basically, they imagine Aegon I probably told both his wives and his son, but things become messier after Maegor's reign. I don't have all the names in front of me, but they made a good case for how it could get to the events in Hot D and, maybe more interesting, how it might have had an influence on Summerhall and Maester Aemon and Bloodraven going to the Wall. Worth a listen.

As to why we've never heard of it before, if it really is such a close kept secret, it wouldn't appear in F&B or TWoIaF because those arw written by maesters can canonically, who wouldn't be privy to this info. Most important to all of this is that apparently GRRM added it to the show, not the showrunners.

I owe this thread a Mushroom post, but I'll wait to see if he shows up in the next episode. Da
