It doesn’t matter once you’re at the show. I was at Quebec City, and I think Buckle Up is a ridiculous song. I mean, it’s fine as an obscure album track (late in the order), but meh. But it was the 2nd or 3rd song they played that night, as part of that acoustic set, and I loved it. Mind Your Manners - a song I never would play on my own, blah whatever - but I was bouncing with everyone else when they played it. All this talk goes out the window at show time. I Got Shit, Black, Porch, Present Tense and Alive were my highlights in Quebec.

And to give what may be an unpopular opinion, I do not like their cover of Purple Rain. The song itself isn’t the issue, it’s great. It just doesn’t seem natural for them. I don’t know. I felt the same when they covered PF’s Mother. Great song, but you guys aren’t pulling it off. It’s not that they aren’t capable, but when they play a song like RITFW, you know PJ is geared for it.

^ I agree with what you say about Purple Rain, but I always loved their cover of Mother and I'm bummed that they stopped playing it.

Purple Rain is awful. Josh certainly doesn't help.
Seems like Mike on electric, Stone on acoustic (and in its usual key):tragabigzanda wrote:Killer start. Was Garden actually acoustic?

This was my first PJ show since 2016, and held onto these tickets since the initial 2020 scheduled tour. Had GA tickets and walked in maybe 10 minutes before PJ hit stage, and had a great spot in the middle. The pit is a lot smaller than I imagined (maybe a couple hundred tickets?). Ottawa crowds are notoriously stiff (it's a government town) but the presence of travelling out of towners in the building always makes PJ shows more energic than other arena shows in this city.
It was fun show, setlist was very varied with deep tracks that old obsessive me would've loved the selection, but even the stock songs like Evenflow and Betterman hit the spot after so many years. I don't think I recognized any of the new material other than DOTC, which doesn't as great live as I imagined it would. Eddie's banter is definitely a lot more reflective about the band's history and that most of the touring years are behind them.
Also had 10c tickets for Hamilton and Toronto but offloaded them next morning as that "can't wait to do that again in a few nights" feeling wasn't there. This band isn't just doesn't do it for me (at least not right now) that I have to travel to see them anymore. It's nice that Ottawa seems to have become a staple stop on their North American tours that I can see them locally every once in a while. Perhaps in 2020 I would've taken in all three shows when it was initially supposed to happen, but in 2022 it just would've felt like a chore.

Re: 2022-09-03: Ottawa, Canada
It was also my first PJ show since 2016...i think the crowd was more energetic than a typical Ottawa crowd but i chalk that up to there being no Montreal show for some odd reason this tour.
It does feel like there is more banter (and obviously less songs) than in the past...though i think Ed's actually gotten much better at the banter thing over the years. Was slightly disappointed that the opening "accoustic" set wasnt accoustic at all just sort of playing the way they normally would but sitting instead of standing. I noticed Ed seems to have trouble walking normally these days...he sort of limps then hops, its odd but i can imagine that these shows are hard on the body at this point.
Like you greatly enjoyed the show and actually really appreciated hearing the old staples again. The crowd ate it up and at this point its kind of always in the back of my head that this show might be my last time seeing them. But also have no desire to travel to see these shows anymore, but that's probably as much about me at this point as it is the music.
