Re: Lightning Bolt: The Official Album Thread
Getaway - Good shit. 4.5 out of 5.
This is what Pearl Jam will always be for me, no matter how far they stray, or how much I like where they go. And it's great here.
MYM - Good shit. 4 out of 5.
Punk PJ at its finest. 2nd best style they have
My Father's Son - Good shit. 4.5 out of 5.
New territory. Unusual tempo, chord progressions, aggressive vocals. Love it. I will rock this one for a long time to come. However, the transition to Sirens is awkward at best, and takes away from Sirens. I don't get this sequence at all.
Sirens - Good shit - 4 out of 5.
Not my favorite style, but they do this one so damn well, it just works. It will have more meaning to me than all of these. I don't think it's the best thing they've ever done, and it will get skipped a lot. A lot. But that doesn't mean i don't dig it.
Lightning Bolt - Pretty good shit - 3.5 out of 5.
Driving tune. Could do without the tamborines and shaker shit, but i dig it. Happy times
Infallible - Good shit - 4.5 out of 5 - More new territory. Once I accept the chorus for what it is, it works well. Dark and light. Heavy and free, all at once.
Pendulum - Good shit - 5 out of 5. This is what I want out of my band. Mixed in perfectly with the tracks around it. Love it. Creates an atmosphere without too much effort. The song creates more than itself.
Swallowed Whole - Good shit- 4.5 out of 5. The bridge is damn near perfect. There's a moment here that makes the song become more than just Ed. Can't wait to hear this one live.
Let the Records Play - Average - 3 out of 5. Should have just really overdone the 50's doo-wop guitar, heavy it up. The intro has so much promise, then just dissapoints all the way. The bridge/solo gets close, bu the chorus just kills it. And fade into...
Sleeping By Myself - Bad shit - 2 out of 5. Should have been a xmas single. Not really a bad tune, just way out of place here. Way, way out of place.
Yellow Moon - Good shit - 4.5 out of 5. This is what a Pearl Jam ballad should sound like. Great move Mike McC! A tinge of cheese, but really gets there. Can't wait for this live in the first encore, sit-down style.
Future Days - Puke - 1.5 out of 5. Would have been good shit 4 out of 5, except for the fucking piano. I'm going to re-cut this and strip the piano. Such a better song without it. I love the message, all about children and the future. Ed does well, I like it from afar, but there's just something about it close up, especially with the bookend pianos. Great message to close the album with, but fuck, that fucking piano just pops up and ruins it just when I think I might have liked it.
Overall -
45.5 / 60 = Good shit. Not great. But good shit nonetheless.
Would have been great, like 54 or 55 out of 60, with the following changes-
1) Put SBM on the 2013 xmas single, keep the album at 11 songs
2) Kill the fucking FD piano
3) Move Sirens between Swallowed Whole and LTRP, everything else the same sequence
4) Re-work the LTRP chorus, keep the 50's vibe and the rough guitar in the foreground.
That's it. 4 small changes, and it's a fucking great record.

How else do you describe someone who has different tastes than you and is vocal about it on a forum deigned specifically to talk about those tastes?malice wrote:please, please, please find a new wordIlluminEddie wrote:Wendy Carlos's Twin wrote:Anyone who says that ANYTHING on this album is "best since Yield" or "best since Vitalogy" should have their heads examined immediately. After Backspacer, hearing this album brings a sigh of relief. They're not completely done.

SBM is fucking terrible on second listen, sticks out like a sore dick in a 20,000 count bag of limp dicks.
BO'B can go fuck himself with all of the aforementioned dicks.

I think it's actually quite good as a song.
