The best way for me to expound on how they are different animals is that at a Springsteen show, the guy is fully aware of the enormity of the moment and makes it feel even bigger. And he believes in his heart that if they play hard enough he can provide rock and roll deliverance. Frankly, in some ways he does. It’s an incredibly joyous but big experience, whether you see him by himself in the Wiltern, or with the E Street Band at the Garden or a stadium.
Conversely, Pearl Jam and particularly Eddie Vedder, have a way of making even the hugest crowds seem like an intimate gathering. I can never put my finger on exactly what it is that they do where by the end of the show you truly feel like you’re in the room with them and your friends - is it the setlist choices? The Eddie babble? The crowd itself? Whatever the magic, you walk out of there that night and it was your show and your night and not some repeated theatrical spectacle- just the purest form of a fan with his band, as if there aren’t another 20-30,000 of folks just like me experiencing the same thing.
