well, but you also mention three auteurs who are radically different from what Wilde is, at least so far, i mean those guys also write and produce their own movies.

I also think its not fair to compare them.

I can say tough that if you watch Wilde's video for RHCP, you already have a hint of how good and interesting she can be in terms of visual asthetic...and in some ways its similar to what she was about to do with Booksmart.

Look, im not saying she is groundbreaking at all, but she was very interesting visual ideas for sure, and the fact that most of her collabs in her new movie are A listers is also interesting to me at least. It doesnt lessens her work at all.

Will be she be great? not sure. Do i liker her movies? No. Booksmart was a tired and kinda old raunch movie and i didnt believed for a second those characters existed in the real world.

Dont Worry Darling was a better intent, but failed at being mysterious and new at a very early stage in the movie.

Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Very confused by this. I think movies are less stylized than ever, informed by the language of television and a story-first approach to filmmaking. It's all flat medium shots with little to no expressiveness or personality, especially Marvel movies. Lumping them in with Michael Bay is nuts to me, they are worlds apart. What you call visual stylization is a sorely needed thing in contemporary film, because we are drowning in boxy and characterless cinematography.

Maybe we're defining stylized differently. You mentioned S Craig Zahler and I would actually offer him as an example of a filmmaker who is able to create very interesting, artful images with a pretty modest budget.

yeah, i'd describe zahler as someone with an unrelentingly conspicuous style.

seems like what trag bemoans is a certain strain of maximalism or self-consciously busy aesthetics? is that right, trag?
