I’ve been listening to a lot of pearl jam this year - the whole catalog - and my rankings have shifted a little bit. With the caveat that even the albums on the bottom are still really good and every album has a mood that makes it the right album for that moment:

1. Vitalogy
2. Ten (probably prefer Ten song per song but Vitalogy is the better album experience)
3. Vs
4. Gigaton
5. Backspacer
6. Lightning Bolt

(I love pearl jam’s exploration of middle age)

7. Yield
8. S/T (dipping below yield)
9. Riot Act (not sure if its risen up in ranks but grown in appreciation)
10. binaural (too many dead zones)
11. better listen start to finish than Binaural but Binaural has the higher highs)

I like that you refuse to even name it!

So you prefer Eddie warbling with a cold on Backspacer to Eddie lurching between self-restraint and all out pushing himself to his most intense limits?

Since 94 Vitalogy has topped my list. Saw them twice this month. It’s Ten. Ten is perfect. It’s the best opener (Release), the best staple (EvenFlow), the best ballad (Black), the best anthem (Alive), and has the best collection of non-album songs (State, Breath, Footsteps, Ledbetter). I don’t know what the weakest track on this album is. Once, Oceans, Deep? Fuck off. Everything feels essential.

I’d say the first 6 albums in the order of release, Gigaton, and then Albums 7-10 in order of release.

100%. I dont think backspacer is an eddie showcase but there is a nasal quality to almost all of the no code songs I dont like, and the shrieking in habit or lukin I really dont care for. i dont like those 95 shows for that reason.

3. Vitalogy
4. Vs
5. Riot Act
6. Binaural
7. Avocado
8. Gigaton
9. Ten
10. Lightning Bolt
11. Backspacer

The first four will probably never change for me; after that, 5-10 could all interchange at some point depending on the day. 11 is a lock for me though.

Huh. I love No Code but actually kind of feel you on those two songs. The guitar solo on Habit is hot AF but Lukin I don't care for unless it's the slow version.
