The start sounds exactly like Soundgarden's "Dusty"

Is that what it is?

It's a total SG lift but in a good way

This song REALLY needed a solo after the bridge. Would have been the best song on the album for me. As it is now, it's a little frustrating, but I'll take it.

Took a few listens, but I'm on board with this song now. Best part for me is that this is usually the type of song Ed gets screechy on and he avoided that and did some pretty good things vocally.

Its especially funny after hearing ed talk about the lyrics in that interview, I was expecting something really deep or something I dunno, or well I wasnt expecting once pt 2.

Which is what we got, its fun enough that I can ignore them right now though mostly.

These are spectacularly bad though:

And what a pity you left us so soon to climb your mountain of regret

Now Father you're dead and gone and I'm finally free to be me.
Thanks for all your fucked up gifts, for which I've got no sympathy.
I'm living in a war torn place in the bounds of fifth syphmony.
Thanks for this and thanks for that I gotta let go your legacy

Can someone explain the fifth sypmhony thing?

No idea. Maybe the lyric is incorrect?

Well its between the two.

Really does sound like symphony though. Maybe its something 'on knee'

The lyric seems right. For a laugh, I just looked at Beethoven's 5th Symphony on Wikipedia, and it's *possibly* to do with being caught up in the tension and feeling of flux of the music, in this case C Minor:

The key of the Fifth Symphony, C minor, is commonly regarded as a special key for Beethoven, specifically a "stormy, heroic tonality".[23] Beethoven wrote a number of works in C minor whose character is broadly similar to that of the Fifth Symphony. Writer Charles Rosen says,
Beethoven in C minor has come to symbolize his artistic character. In every case, it reveals Beethoven as Hero. C minor does not show Beethoven at his most subtle, but it does give him to us in his most extroverted form, where he seems to be most impatient of any compromise.[24]

So this is pretty wild speculation, and Ed might not mean *this* 5th Symphony, but he (the speaker of the song) probably associates a 5th symphony with this feeling of being the reluctant hero of his own story, and needing a release from the father's past legacy.

I don't think it would've been an odd reference when the songs generally contained more idiosyncratic and strange references. Remember the literature Vitalogy and Yield was based on. This band used to be artier. I think it feels like a strange reference because he so rarely uses them now, so when he does, it feels like a jarring intrusion. If the rest of the lyrics are bland and obvious, a reference to Beethoven is going to feel pointless.
