I think parental consent needs to be questioned in a lot of cases -- for example, if a child confidentially comes out at school to a counsellor, they should not be "outed" to their parents, it's potentially very dangerous

I feel like, if young people in schools can get free condoms, menstrual products and birth control, we can ideally, eventually, move society forward so that puberty blockers are included

it hasn't been long since married trans people had to get spousal consent to transition, which is a similar control tactic

but fwiw, in the grand scheme of things that's a small point of disagreement; if B isn't quite there it's OK, the main thing is to underline that trans kids need these and they need (controlled, but not gatekept) access to them

There are mechanisms for all sorts of things that allow kids to seek treatment without parental consent. Nothing in this debate has convinced me that the default should be to provide them without parental permission.

The AAP and all relevant professional organizations are entirely captured by true believers, unable to reassess like Scandinavia has done, so I'm not sure where the correction would come from.

Some of the medical stuff like puberty blockers, I don’t know enough to comment on.

And that's the approved use cases. We are talking off-label/unapproved when it comes to delaying puberty in kids with GD.

Totally agree, and I am with you in that schools should not be forced to 'out' kids as some on the red team have suggested, but let's get more basic than that. Can teachers socially transition kids?

You and I probably define "socially transitioning" kids differently.

I would expect teachers to honor the name and gender that a child gives to them, and I have no problem with them not telling a parent if the child specifically requests that.

I would also expect such a situation to be referred to a school psychologist or social worker, who can support the child however that kid needs, including figuring out how to share a transition with parents or deal with a situation at home that might make coming out dangerous.

So, I guess I'd expect teachers to support a trans kid, but wouldn't expect them to guide them on their journey.
