I think a lot of the songs that I think are just ok (read: most of the ones I don't hate) could benefit greatly from having a producer with a lighter touch.
A lot of things come off as if it was an amateurs work. He's really too rough and heavy-handed for what he's trying to do.
Seriously.

I'd be interested in your examples at some point, but I agree with your general point. It's interesting that he's gone from "Ghost" (where he explains nothing, and MAN it works) to this.

I haven't met anyone over the age of 15 who listens to either Kelly Clarkson or Tool.
u live in a cave or something?
For me, the stereotypical Tool listener is a greasy 15 year old boy in a Tool t-shirt, wanking over Manyard's lyrics and wondering why 'modern music' is crap. He's the kind of guy who will complain on YouTube that he was born in 'the wrong generation' and that 'real music' needs guitar, drums and bass.

Other bands he listens to: Pink Floyd, Rush. Any pretentious prog shite really.

As for Kelly Clarkson, she's fucking awesome actually...SINCE YOU'VE BEEN GOOOOOOOONE
im not sure 15 year olds even know who tool is

as far as kelly clarkson, have u ever been to a bar when that song comes on? holy shit, its like a female mosh pit.

So, are these songs individually available for download yet? I'm about to leave on a three hour drive and I'd love to have this album to listen to. Am I S.O.L.?

To be fair though, you mostly hang out with minors.

It's like he's a kid who's been shown what all the cool buttons do on the soundboards, and then left to mix his own tape that he can take home and show his mum.

They were in the gmail at one point, they might still be, but they're not amazing quality or anything.

Take any video tutorial on how to mix a song that has similar elements to what he does and you'll be explained to do things in a way that doesn't sound like a lot of stuff here. I hate how he mixed the layered vocals in Swallowed Whole especially the loudest "loud" in the choruses that sounds like someone practising their Cher impression. It's super warbly because of the layered vocals and sounds synthetic and nothing like Ed actually sounds. Another WTF moment is Pendulum when at the beginning you have the panning from left to right. It's so bad that the moving sound not only isn't a smooth transition from one side to the other (it starts moving towards the centre and then it's on the opposite side out of a sudden) but it also sounds off bit.

This I'm sure is not a new observation but there really is a shit ton of keyboards/piano on LB. Like to a ridiculous degree. It's most egregious on Yellow Moon and nearly destroys the song. The guitars should be cranked especially by the end ala Sleight of Hand but instead they are buried behind a wall of keyboards. Ten-Riot Act had some keyboards on there but never anything super noticeable to me other than Black, Low Light and LBC.

Also, when the violin comes in on Future Days it sounds like the ambient music in Frontierland (I was at Disney 3 weeks ago).

More royalites for BoB, wonder if he gets songwriting credits this time around.

Oh God I hadn't thought about that.

Because that's the natural regression of a Pearl Jam thread.
