Behind The Sun: The Official RHCP Thread.

Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

i get what you mean, but i feel these two are the best ones since Californication and they also sound like they could have been released after that one.

I can’t really figure out where these albums stack against their prior albums - they just sound really good, and Dream Canteen in particular seems like much more range in the box that RHCP generally exists in. Do I like them more than the albums in the Klinghoffer era? Yes. Do I like them as much as the other Frusciante albums? Probably as much as most of them. That’s about as close as I can get in the number of times I have heard them.

Broken record here, but I think the band is still operating at near enough to their peak, but Anthony's goofy vocal style never stood a chance at aging as gracefully. He's kinda painted himself into a corner in that respect. (The exception being ballads and lighter tunes, which he has always excelled with)

joostone wrote:My assessment of Dream Canteen is the same as with Love Unlimited. I enjoy both records just fine. And they are really inspirational to me, but....perhaps not for the right reasons. Let me explain. When I was about 13 years old I 'discovered' the Peppers. Soon they became my obsession and favorite band. BSSM is almost part of my DNA. I started playing bass because of that record. Mofo, Mothers Milk and One Hot Minute.. I all took it in. And then at the peak of my young fandom they released 'Californication'. By this time I was playing bass for a year orso and Ive studied on that record for months and months. I moved on and the Peppers dropped a bit of my radar. I still think 'BTW' is a great record. When Stadium Arcadium was released I felt that everything started to sound a bit alike. Never had the desire to play along with it. Ok, fast forward to present times. I still play a lot of music in several projects and jamsessions. And ROTDC and LU are inspirational, yes. But mostly because it's sooo undercooked and loose. It's soo simple that It's easy to replicate. With that MM<>BTW stretch they were creatively on another planet if you ask me. How the hell do write such a good song a 'Scar Tissue', 'Soul to Squeeze'. Or how can you funk this hard on 'If you have to ask'. Or that 'Aeroplane' bass solo is so freaking good I will never achieve such levels. But now....These new songs all sound like stuff I could jam of come up with. So yes...finally they are inspirational to me but probably not for the right reasons. Basically for the same reasons that Foo Fighters are an inspiration lol. In the grand scheme of the whole RHCP discography I pile these new records with Stadium Arcadium, Im With you, Im beside (suprisingly good!) and the Getaway. Each has moments that I really like. But overall there's just not enough for me on those records.

I’m beside you was fucking awesome.

Fantano liked Canteen. Music reviews are mostly junk, but I thought y'all should know.
Spoiler: show
He clowned on the exact same lyrics as we did, which was funny. Somewhat Traggish in his praise en route to rating it a decent 6 (which is basically a miracle score for the Chilis), going as far as to call "Eddie" one of their best songs ever.

Of course. He just has a weird habit of overstating the merits of shit like mumble rap and chart pop. He gave Lil Pump the same score as Kendrick's DAMN, for example, which is obviously insane.

But I digress. He is but one melon.

Seemed a bit strange to lead with "I wish they'd change things up once in a while" only to hit them with a "no, not like that!"

Also, I couldn't help but laugh when he scoffed at the use of processed beats when they have "one of the greatest modern rock drummers sitting right there" (shout outs to tree_). I've seen this exact argument countless times from Pumpkins fans.

Listening to the new podcast with John in the Rick Rubin show. They talk a lot bout the blood sugar sex magik days and the years after that, and i just remembered how fucked up John was around that time.

I remember being a kid watching some pic maybe in a magazine and thinking thats Frusciante?? And then listening to Niandra Lades and really not getting it.

Anthony's appearance at Rogan is boring as fuck, mainly because Joe is such a shitty interviewer.

this got better once joe let Anthony to talk bout the music, Rick Rubin, Under The Bridge, his addiction...

Interesting to know they have more music unreleased from this sessions, even a song called Comedy Store that has a chorus about Dave Chapelle running for president.

The band didnt wanted it out, but Kiedis says there is a wicked groove there.
