Isn't Mastodon pretty decentralized? Sounds like deplatforming tactics are pretty hard to pull off there. It's basically what a lot of the right have been calling for for a while.

Far too optimistic.

If only there was some kind of icon we could use to separate the real ones from the fakes.

Verified folks have been able to this before Elon took over, it was just a warning before and not a temporary suspension of the check.

Hardly. There was a mass migration to the Ireland Mastadon space over the weekend. Twitters European head office is in Dublin. 500 people there have been informed their jobs are gone.
Fuck that. On top of all the other bullshit musk is doing to ruin Twitter.

Maybe? I don't quite understand it but it's not like Tor where there is little local control. Users can block at the server level (only right thinking folks allowed in!) and it appears it uses OAuth for A&A, a good thing, but it also appears the accounts are local meaning the server you sign up on matters.BurtReynolds wrote:Isn't Mastodon pretty decentralized? There's an icon that tells people you're willing to give the world's richest man $8 a month.BurtReynolds wrote:If only there was some kind of icon we could use to separate the real ones from the fakes.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

While I am aware none of you rocket scientists will read it, here is Twitter's Roth explaining the new rules and stating the blue check change (which no one cares about lol) will be delayed until after the elections today:

Re: Social Media: The God That Failed
Most bots aren't verified, so charging 8$ for a checkmark does nothing unless they plan on making Twitter a subscription model. And checkmarks are absolutely no symbol for truth now, so that isn't going to change.

This is the key part I think most folkx were missing:
By leveraging Apple Pay and Google Pay they backdoor multi-factor authentication into the system without overburdening the platform itself.

Except they admit it probably won’t work, otherwise why delay Twitter Blue?Bi_3 wrote:Different problem.BurtReynolds wrote:Most bots aren't verified, so charging 8$ for a checkmark does nothing unless they plan on making Twitter a subscription model. Re: Social Media: The God That Failed
But bots don't have to bother with any of that unless they plan on making twitter a subscription model, or at least severely limiting what free accounts can do. All it does is prevent spammers from being verified. They'll still be in the pool of the vast majority of users who use it for free.Bi_3 wrote:Different problem.BurtReynolds wrote:Most bots aren't verified, so charging 8$ for a checkmark does nothing unless they plan on making Twitter a subscription model. It has to be so much money that a spammer won’t want to part with it. Like $8.B wrote:Couldn't you do that for a penny?

Well they're not individual actors. They are bot banks of thousands.
