Very moved by The Fabelmans. A beautiful movie. Frustrating but typical that a nuanced film about discovering your calling while getting caught in between your parents failing marriage and dealing with the open antisemitism of the 1960s is flattened out by the marketing department and some reviewers as being solely about "Hollywood magic!" Really lovely stuff though. Michelle Williams sounds just like Judy Garland. Spielberg and Kaminski, probably the best dp/director combo

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

It’s elemental. Could’ve been written 100 years ago. I loved it.

I think it's a movie that looks like an allegory.

But it isn't. The metaphors are misdirection, especially the Irish Civil War backdrop. It's a movie about a man who realizes he isn't as genius as he thought he was but can't handle that revelation and becomes self-destructive.

I feel like Norris should watch this and weigh in on the civil war stuff

The Civil War is interesting, because it also shrugs off easy metaphors. In part because it doesn't really make much sense. You could watch a movie like The Wind that Shakes the Barley and come away thinking, "oh the Civil War was about socialism." But, no, it wasn't. I don't know if Ireland has yet settled on what it was about.

There's a lot of well-deserved pride about the Irish War of Independence, but I think the best word to describe the legacy of the civil war which immediately followed it is maybe 'shame'. What was it really about? It's hard to nail down politically. The two political parties which dominated Irish politics for the last century were both born out of the civil war. It is essentially impossible to tell the two of them apart. De Valera was no socialist, far from it. The two sides in the civil war were decided less by politics and more by which IRA commanders were willing to accept the Treaty and how loyal their soldiers were to them.

It doesn't map neatly onto the movie. Or maybe it does. These two men are brothers who do love each other, even in the midst of conflict. They reconcile, but not really. The fight ends, but never ends, even as it becomes about nothing and new things. It's all twisted
