Doesn't Cameron have a reputation for being an asshole or a nut? He seems fairly reasonable in this video.
Not nearly as nutty or as self important as the average Hollywood personality.

Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

Taking it all with a grain of salt, but the early reviews of this that I've read are basically saying Cameron has knocked it out of the park with this
"I really enjoy sandwiches but the other guys are so good at making sandwiches that I don't make them. Now I make sandwiches."

I miss the days when critics had an antagonistic relationship with Hollywood. Now they are usually rubber stamps.

I struggled to stay awake for the first hour and the second and third were a mixed bag of thin storytelling backstopped by impressive visuals. So, not very different from the first movie in that respect but I remember really enjoying the first one while in the theater (and not so much afterward, upon reflection). I was out pretty much from the beginning while watching Way of Water (I loathe voiceover narration, in particular).

The achievement in effects work is undeniable but the one-dimensional storytelling and characters sunk this thing. Tough note to start on with at least three more movies planned.

I continue to lament Cameron devoting the rest of his career to this franchise instead of having used the effects work in the first movie as a test bed/launchpad for other stories. That said, it seems like he’s entered George Lucas territory in valuing style over substance — he’s lost his storytelling fastball with tired tropes and paper thin characters.

And I hate to pile on but the score was mediocre at best and wtf is that Edie Faldo casting?

Next weekend will be the real temperature check. If there’s a sharp decrease, that will spell trouble for them and the future of the franchise. Part 3 is already shot but we’ll see if 2 underperforming forces Cameron to scale back the effects work, length, etc. while also shelving 4 and 5. I just hope a mediocre box office take tells him his story, script, and characters stink so he can try and at least end on a high note.

I just left the theater and I'm more on the positive side than negative. It's long as hell, but it doesn't feel weighty or punishing like Black Panther 2. There are moments of stunning cinematic beauty in this movie -- there's an entire sequence when the kids are first exploring the ocean that was just pure serotonin, I just wanted to live in those shots, they were so gorgeous.

I didn't particularly care for the first Avatar, but this felt like a treat. James Cameron doing a lot of his greatest hits, deploying his entire bag of tricks and some new ones. The plot is about as straightforward as you can imagine, but it's also a very sweet, very warm and earnest movie about the drive of a parent to do everything in their power to protect their offspring. It is extremely simple, and they leave a few plot threads open to explore in future installments, but never in a disingenuous or ham-fisted way like Marvel or DC do.

If you're gonna watch this, watch it on the biggest screen possible and in 3D. I never liked 3D before, but what they do here with it is gorgeous. The high framerate stuff looked absolutely beautiful. In fact, if I have a gripe with the film's visuals it's that I wish it had been consistent throughout. Sometimes the regular framerate scenes felt distractingly stuttery coming out of the HFR stuff
