I’m a bit embarrassed to ask this, but. My life/job the last decade or so hasn’t allowed me much free time to dedicate to reading. Not that I haven’t had free time, but other activities just take priority. Little by little, I’m trying to make reading a higher priority, but to be honest with you, I have no idea where to really dive in. It’s a bit overwhelming. Do you guys follow particular sites, blogs, or other recommendation channels? Or just go blindly into a store and pick out something that sounds interesting?

when i was more serious about reading, i followed a a dozen blogs or websites, kept track of interesting presses, had friends who were serious readers who i could ask, and also rooted around in the cvs of professors i liked to see what they wrote about. if there was a writer or book i didn't know, i would email it to myself. now i keep tabs on half-dozen or dozen critics who i think are smart and have good taste. i wouldn't wander into a bookstore and grab just anything. too many books i have on good authority i should read that i haven't.

This is what I used to do—I had an RSS catcher app and followed like 50 blogs, had some keyword notifications set up so whenever a new author was compared to someone else, it would rise to the top of the queue, would always scour the year-end lists and the new-year-preview lists for any two-sentence summaries that sounded interesting. I’d have lists running of like 50 books per year I’d want to read. Honestly, it was too much at times, especially when I was in school, and now I just sort of read anything that sounds interesting and follow a couple of publishing houses closely.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.
