Man that movie was good but it put me in a weird headspace. Need to watch something lighthearted before I go to bed

Pretty big waste of talent. I do not like Olivia Munn though. Something about her annoys tf out of me.

Re: What movies are you watching?
The Fabelmans has two of the best scenes you'll find in a movie. Sadly, they're contained within two and a half hours of underwritten, over-acted, kind of annoying Spielberg-ania. I'm not a Spielberg partisan, so this didn't quite land for me. It's not terrible, it's just not my cup of tea. The two great scenes, for those of you who've seen it, are the two extended cameos. Uncle Boris in the bedroom (heartbreaking) and you goddamn well know who. Especially that second one, holy cow
Please consider voting for me

Re: What movies are you watching?
Neither of those is the best scene in the movie (that would be the hallway confrontation during the prom -- "I made you look like you could fly")

I think I liked it more than you did (less than Jorge did) but I don't disagree with anything you said here. I could quibble with degrees, probably, but why? As I said before, it's a lovely movie but it's also sort of hollow. Worth seeing but I wanted more from it.The Argonaut wrote:The Fabelmans has two of the best scenes you'll find in a movie. Re: What movies are you watching?
I get the feeling Spielberg feels sentimental and stuff when making movies, but I never really get much of a feeling from the movies themselves.

I didn't watch Lincoln so I can't speak on it. Ready Player One was dogshit save for that one wild, thrilling race scene near the start which was worth the price of admission alone. Generally I feel like the "sentimentality" critique of his work is facile and tired, it's such a cliche that it's become more of a lens through which people view his work than what's in the work itself. The Fabelmans is a melancholic, regretful, and deeply personal examination of his youth more than anything resembling the chintzy sentiment he gets accused of

Re: What movies are you watching?
In the "Spielberg" documentary thingy he straight up admits his works are largely schmaltzy and usually patriotic in some way.

Re: What movies are you watching?
I agree. And I actually wanted MORE Of the chintzy sentiment he gets accused of. That was my main problem with the movie. I felt it lacked sentiment. It was so sober and cold. I just wanted a bit more magic. There are several scenes that get there (or almost get there).Jorge wrote:The Fabelmans is a melancholic, regretful, and deeply personal examination of his youth more than anything resembling the chintzy sentiment he gets accused of
Though, to totally contradict myself, I did love how the parents where handled with grace and a lack of agenda (and overt sentimentality). In spaces where he could have been heavy-handed or cliche, he never is where they are concerned. I with Dano's performance had been stronger, though.
