I agree. And I think our perception of the art work was initially influenced by the sound of mind your manners. It fits what we're hearing just fine.harmless wrote:Anything is a better argument than semantics, for sure. But there were visual clues in this artwork that eclecticism is what we might get, as well as light and dark. The artwork for SBM was a mindfuck because the song will be, I'm sure of it. We also know they had two sessions; one was "a logical extension of Backspacer", and the other wasn't.

The problem (and I think it will be a problem, although not for me, thankfully) with releasing a totally unrepresentative single as your lead track for an album is absolutely classic PJ and has plagued them forever. Except given the surprises these days, that means more people are puking in their mouths. By and large, a surprise from PJ is a relatively unpleasant experience these days. Personally, I've had a bad taste in my mouth with new PJ before (Yield, Binaural, even Riot Act). So it's old news to me. The worst thing about S/T and Backspacer were that I felt very little at all for them. They were just OK, for different reasons. My positive reaction to this album has been through the roof and the songs are hitting the right emotional buttons. Why? I haven't got the first clue, but I'm enjoying it and not analysing it too much.

Yeah OK that might've been a little white lie. I've been analysing it to death but what I mean is I've not really been entertaining everything I know could be interpreted as awful about these songs. I know that my favourite pop songs are pretty bad, but they do the job, so I don't consider them bad. Backspacer just didn't do that job, on the whole; it wasn't rocky enough to kick ass for me, and wasn't pop enough for me to strip off to it.Birds in Hell wrote:Uhharmless wrote:My positive reaction to this album has been through the roof and the songs are hitting the right emotional buttons. Yeah, guys, these tracks are full-bodied Vedder. Why is MYM produced so thinly? Is that meant to be a punk thing? 'Cus between that, and the fact that Matt doesn't really show up, I'm always reminded why I don't like punk when I hear this song.

It's in the wrong place.
Would have been a great entrance to a remixed second half.
Just to lift things.

Still top 20 at Active and Mainstream. It got a thousand spins last week (Sirens, still on its way up, managed 2,000, for comparison). I'd guess it'll get another three thousand on its way out the door. That would leave things looking something like this for the post-Riot Act phase:
Just Breathe: 55-60,000 (I forget exactly offhand)
Fixer: 50,000
Mind Your Manners: 38,000
WWS: 34,000
Everything else: less than 20,000 (unless I'm forgetting something)

Re: Mind Your Manners
Interesting. I'd say that's pretty damn good for a single as "harsh" as MYM.
