Decided to start collecting after finally setting up a record player I got as a gift years ago. I have about 10 records I took from my dad’s collection when they moved a while back…other than just spending $25 a pop on albums I know I want from Amazon, how should I go about growing my collection? Only a couple record stores out my way so will definitely hit those up but assume prices will be similar online. Are the online subscription services any good?

There’s no real tips other than just buy records you like. In terms of where, it just depends on what your priorities are: new records in small record stores will generally be a few dollars more than big places like Amazon on average, but worth it if you’d rather support them. If you’re trying to strictly save money and buy them as cheap as possible, then Amazon or ebay is generally your best bet for new albums. For used records, the used online market has generally started evening out prices across most stores. Also might depend where you live, I used to live in a place that had one record store in the whole region, and they priced their records offensively high. Refused to shop there. So just do your due diligence and comparison shop

I haven’t found any online subscriptions worth the money. Usually they are overpriced, and you don’t have as much say in the records you get. I’d prefer to buy 2-3 records I know I want rather than be sent 6-8 records that some service thinks I should have.

Right now I’m just amassing a library of my favorites and “essentials” as my setup is not anything special. In theory down the road there would be significant audio quality upgrades but for right now, this is just a small hobby of collecting. I really just want to have a decent and diverse library so that when guests come over, they can have some fun browsing through my collection and choosing something interesting to play while we have drinks in the living room. Sounds about as middle aged as it gets right there…

This last three years i cant believe how expensive vinyl got. Part of that is the pressing problem, another part is that buying records suddenly got popular...but i couldnt believe how different prices were in France or Spain this year vs 2019
