Re: HBO Television Show: True Detective
i can see how burt would grate against a show whose main protagonist is an autodidact, contemptuous of the masses, and draws on some of the worst philosophers & philosophic traditions to form a "idiosyncratically" homespun worldview

It seems like it was written just for me, but it was so very, very dumb. I'd rather just go re-read Conspiracy Against The Human Race.

Same problem with Season 1.tragabigzanda wrote:My only real problem with S2 is the plot structure. There’s an event halfway through that serves as a reset of the chessboard and they should’ve just started the plot from there (or truncated episodes 1-3 into a single pilot episode)

Cohle does have some great lines about Louisiana/East Texas being a soul sucking hellhole unfit for human life, though.

VV is completely out of his element in TD2. But it's not his fault. That's all the writing.
The other three are fucking incredible, though.

The writing all around is lacking. But Rachel and Colin are fucking great at their jobs, so you barely notice.tragabigzanda wrote:Hard disagree. Vaughn is great when he does dramatic. There’s a plucky pathos to him that’s so unique. He looks almost insane at times.
If we’re talking who got shafted on the writing, I’d say that’s more Taylor Kitsch
It hurts VV the most, though. And he deserves all the credit in the world for trying to make choices and overcome all his obstacles. He just doesn't quite clear the bar.
Kitsch isn't as good an actor as Vaughn. And the show doesn't ask him to carry as much. So he manages to pull off the sleight of hand better than Vince.

You're absolutely right about Vaughn in more dramatic material, though. I like when he stretches from his own shtick. Have you seen The Cell (2000)?
