I have no idea what the lyrics are about and I don't care. Something about a genius's son, and Beethoven. Whatever.
Definitely the strongest song on the album (by some margin) for me.

I'm with you on this. When lyrics really bother me they either have to be really really bad or the song itself must not be very good that I'm focusing on the lyrics instead.Birds in Hell wrote:Unless lyrics are about, I don't know, white supremacy or something, I really can't fathom how they could ruin a song that sounds good to your ear. The actual words themselves are of neglible importance to me, it's the pure sound of the vocal (the musical effect of the choices of vowels, consonants and syllables, the phrasing, etc.) that really matters.
Huh. I guess I hadn't considered that they might be experiential in nature....but, I imagine that being a volunteer amputee probably does help you to appreciate them.Vindicator wrote:I love the lyrics in this song. I'm a volunteer amputee!
yeah lyrics are certainly secondary for me to music/melody.cutuphalfdead wrote:I'm with you on this. When? Where?
Seems very autobiographical to me.
Well, that's a new one.Vindicator wrote:I love the lyrics in this song. I'm a volunteer amputee!

i dunno what to tell u man, i can sing 'balls in your mouth' all day.IlluminEddie wrote:Lyrics are NOT secondary. That statement simply bothers me. Lyrics are so important to a good song. One can certainly enjoy music without lyrics and I suppose non-lyrical music can move someone, but I feel one can't have a real connection to a song without lyrics. It's the bridge to understanding a point of view, generally the writer's.
I think it was in the Mark Richards interview. He said that it wasn't about himself, because he didn't know his father so has nothing against him.IlluminEddie wrote:harmless wrote:Ed said it isn't autobiographical.

I'll just quote myself:benton netty wrote:Somebody better dig up Mozart and have him write some lyrics or no one's ever gonna like his shit.
There's some very interesting delivery here, rhythmically and tonally. It's a similar thing displayed on MYM, and I think if they do more "loud" songs, this is the right way to do it with his older voice.warehouse wrote:yeah lyrics are certainly secondary for me to music/melody.cutuphalfdead wrote:I'm with you on this. this whole song is awesome. it sounds like ed is more focused on candance and rhythm in the verses. the chorus might be the best part of the album. the bridge was probably a song they never finished.

This doesn't make sense. You're saying that you can't have a proper connection with any song without lyrics? I dunno man, that's silly. If a song is designed to be instrumental, you can't critique lyrics; it doesn't preclude emotional attachment. But if a song includes lyrics, those lyrics are fair game for critique as much as the guitar work.IlluminEddie wrote:I'll just quote myself:benton netty wrote:Somebody better dig up Mozart and have him write some lyrics or no one's ever gonna like his shit.

I'd be happy enough to jump on board and ride Supersonic if it weren't for the terrible lyrics, but I don't have that strong a reaction to most songs. These lyrics are just depressingly bad.warehouse wrote:how about: bad music can ruin good lyrics, but bad lyrics cant ruin good music...for me, at least.

i havent even looked at the lyrics to this song to be honest with you. i need to wrap my brain/soul around the entire song before i read the lyrics and try to make sense of them.harmless wrote:I'd be happy enough to jump on board and ride Supersonic if it weren't for the terrible lyrics, but I don't have that strong a reaction to most songs.
