I agree with what you're saying. The visceral quality is mostly fantastic in 1 and 2. But the lack of realism in the action/violence scenes takes the immersion down a few pegs for me. If they just went back and redid those scenes so they look real and seemlessly blend with the rest of the movie they'd both be about 10/10 for me probably.

Will finish this today. The first hour was interesting, although I do hope the second hour takes it up a notch. It was a bit docile.

Will start on The Wolf Of Wall Street. Saw it in the cinema, and possibly one other time. Good movie with some great scenes. A bit long. Anyway, a new opportunity to consider it now.

For me, of all Scorsese's films this one is best recalled by great scenes; the parts are more than the sum.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Especially when your one theater mostly plays the hits and a high-minded film gets just a one-week engagement and you schedule a babysitter to finally see a movie on the big screen for the first time since March and hey look someone has spoiled some key plot points for you go have fun

finished the menu tonight. one criteria for a failed satire is when the satire is only as smart/stupid as its object. when the kind of irony necessary to create distance from this object aint obtaining. that's the menu.

seems increasingly likely that chazelle suffers from the terminal brain disease that afflicts david o russell. babylon has big amsterdam energy, overstuffed in all the wrong ways and I find it impossibly hard to consider it not being anything other than shit. but then i made it through the menu, so who am i to throw stones
