the giant monster was kind of goofy. Also oddly sentient which I don’t remember being the case in the game, but my memory is fuzzy
Other than that I loved it

Did they do the Rat King already?

If I flash back to the gymnasium sequence in the first game, I’d say it acted pretty similar.

That was great. The “unearthing” was incredibly well done.

I suspect I’m going to enjoy the series even more upon a rewatch when I won’t be as hyper focused on similarities and differences from the game. (I’m not sure I liked the slight difference in the final Sam scene, for example.)

Some pretty intense feels in this ep.
Spoiler: show
The deaf 8 year old kid had to get bitten? Come on, now. :(

But on a positive note, the annoying, lumpy resistance leader got smoked. Woohoo!

One of the better action sequences so far in the second half of the episode.
I am not familiar with the game so while I don’t know where the story is going I do know enough not to get feel any character other than Joel or Ellie are safe.

Spoiler: show
Was the scene between Ellie and Sam, where he reveals he was bitten, verbatim from the game? Because it went on for forever and was weird with the pacing.

Almost. Sam doesn’t reveal he was bitten the night before. Ellie finds him standing in a room with his back to her in the morning. The rest is pretty much the same.

He’s also a little older and not deaf in the game.

I’m not sure I like the change (him revealing it to Ellie) but I do think this could have some added emotional payoff in how Ellie reacts to what happens since her blood didn’t help him.

I was pretty hard on this show at the beginning, and I was going to bow out of this thread after Episode 4 because I didn’t like it very much and didn’t want to bring the room down, but this episode dragged me back in, much like Episode 3 did. Like I said then, the show did this weird thing where focusing on other characters made me care about Joel and Ellie more. I think they work best almost as audience surrogates, but I don’t think that’s what the show wants us to read them as. Henry, for as briefly as we knew him, was a much more complex character than Joel, so the pairing makes Joel look shallow by comparison. Am I being too hard on the show again? I dunno. I liked this episode, and I want more of Joel and Ellie riding around and finding other people with more interesting stories, but I think in the end I will probably be disappointed.

That’s likely a product of you playing as Joel for the bulk of the game. Most games want YOU to be the main character and don’t necessarily spend a as much time fleshing your backstory put.

That said, I think there’s opportunity to show some of Joel’s history with the flashback approach they’ve been using all season long.

I just started watching Episode 1 during my lunch break - will hopefully finish it off tonight. Is this The Happening?

Loved episode 5. Both Henry and Sam were great. They’ve just crushed the casting so far… Henry’s hesitation at the end hit hard.
